Day Care Induction Policy and Waivers

Social Group Day Care is not a perfect fit for every dog.  It is essential for the safety of all that we accept only those dogs that are comfortable with the environment and each other, and compliant with staff.  Each dog will therefore be required to join us for a half day induction session, which will be free.

During this session we will be able to introduce the dog gradually to the facility, the dogs and the staff; we will assess whether he/she will be comfortable with us and won't become stressed or anxious; conversely that he/she will not become over-aroused and a danger.  Dogs that fall into either of these categories will not be accepted for daycare.  Staff doing the assessments are experienced and competent in reading dog's body language; we would be doing a disservice to other clients to accept a dog that might become a danger to itself or others and therefore our decision is final.  Reasons for such a decision will be given to the owner verbally at the end of the induction, and in writing as well on request.

No dog can be accepted for day care without a current vaccination certificate or titre test certificate showing that the dog has serological protection from canine parvovirus, canine adenovirus (also known as infectious canine hepatitis) and canine distemper virus.  Vaccination against leptospirosis and kennel cough is also a requirement under the terms of our Licence and for the safety of all; there is no titre testing available for these last two as immune responses to the vaccines do not last longer than twelve months.  Certificates will be photocopied and kept with the dog's record so we can ensure that annual renewals are completed.

We strongly recommend that all dogs that attend daycare are insured.  During the day bumps and grazes can occur in spite of the best efforts of staff; all suitable care will be taken.

The owners of dogs attending daycare will be required to sign the Waiver of Liability form as detailed below on induction; this lasts for the lifetime of the dog when it attends day care at Totally Canine unless superceded.

POLICIES
The Day Care is designed to give dogs a fun, safe, appropriate and stimulating time whilst away from their homes during the business day.  As such:

  • No dog will be accepted without sight of an up-to-date vaccination certificate or titre test certificate to show that the dog has serological protection against Distemper, Canine Adenovirus, Canine Parvovirus, Leptospirosis and Bordetella (Kennel Cough).  A photocopy of the certificate will be kept, to ensure that annual updates are done.
  • No dog will be accepted that has shown any aggressive tendencies to humans or other dogs.
  • No dog will be accepted unless the owner has read, understood and signed agreement to the Certification and Liability Waiver.
  • All staff are trained:
    • to interpret canine body language
    • to play with dogs in a safe and appropriate way
    • to redirect dogs that become over-aroused
    • to intervene safely and positively if play behaviour becomes, or seems likely to become, inappropriate or unsafe
    • in canine first aid and CPR
  • Dogs will be assigned to a playgroup following induction according to size in most instances, but also according to play style if deemed more appropriate.  The reason for the assignment of a dog to a particular play group will be explained to the owner if required but the decision is at the discretion of Totally Canine management and staff.
  • Playgroups will not be left unattended at any time.  Staffing ratio will generally be 1:10 or less, but may occasionally be up to 1:15 if deemed necessary and safe by the management for short periods of time.  There will be at least one member of staff available at all times to cover, to ensure that staffing ratios remain appropriate and safe at all times.
  • During the day various activities will be undertaken with the dogs, which may include play with and without toys, training in basic manners, rest periods, encouragement to practise natural canine behaviours such as digging and sniffing in the sensory garden, water play in hot weather, play with bubbles, mat work, walk on lead, trick training, impulse control encouragement, proprioception games and others from time to time.
  • Any dog that shows signs of distress will be given a safe place in the play room to recuperate.  A verbal or written report will be given to the owner at the end of the day if this occurs.
  • Any dog that shows signs of aggression will be kennelled pending further assessment of the situation.  A written report will be given to the owner on collection if this occurs; the owner will be required to sign to say they have received this report.  Acceptance of the dog for further Day Care sessions may be refused, or accepted with terms to be agreed between the management and the owner.
  • Any dog that shows signs of sickness or disease will be isolated from the group immediately pending assessment.  If the management deems it appropriate the dog will be taken for veterinary treatment at the owner's expense.
  • No punitive or aversive training or handling methods will be used for any dog.  In the event that a dog should be deemed a danger to itself, other dogs or staff it will be moved using approved safe handling equipment to a kennel.
  • The management and staff of Totally Canine Dog Activity Centre all love dogs and enjoy working with them.  As such, we will treat the dogs in our care as though they were our own, with knowledge, love and respect.  Every effort will be made to ensure that the dogs enjoy their time at Day Care,  whilst playing, resting and learning.
